If I rented a car in Interlaken would that be useful in getting to the various towns in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and Berenese Oberland. It seems very very expensive to use the trains so I didn't know if many of the smaller towns were accessible by car or not.
Hi Dina,
If you are already in Interlaken, the railway up to Lauterbrunnen is just a few dollars one-way so it is not at all expensive. What is expensive is taking the cogwheel trains or gondolas up to the towns that are not accessible by car anyways.
No. You can get as far as Lauterbrunnen, or Grindlewald with a car(you'll have to pay for parking). Above these places you can only hike, or use cable cars/trains. You can minimize costs by purchasing the Swiss Pass, or one of the regional passes. Click the "railpasses" tab at the top of this page for details.
Or if you're in good shape, you can just hike from Stechelberg up to Gimmelwald and Murren.
I've had a rental car in the Interlaken area as part of a longer trip, and it wasn't that useful there.
thanks for the responses, that is helpful. I have never been to switzerland before and when i found out the price of the train to the jungfrau was 160 euro a person i got very nervous that the other trains to the various places i hoped to go might be similarly expensive. thanks for the tips!!
If you purchase a Swiss Pass you get a 25% discount from Kl. Scheidegg Station to the top of the Jungfraujoch.
Hi Dina, the train to the top of the Jungfraujoch and the Schilthorn are the most expensive ones. Depending on how many days and what you want to do while in Switzerland the swiss pass could save you a lot of money.
