Understanding the Brussels Metro?

Tell me please why there seem to be 5 Metro lines heading across town from Gare du Midi to Gare to Nord? Wouldn't one line be enough? Thanks for insite on how these work!

Bill - different lines seem to have different stops or sometimes less stops as an express. The most confusing issue is the language - you can get on a car and the map is in French but get off and it is in Dutch so remember your stops in both languages for ease of use.

I took a quick look at several maps online. It appears that there are several lines that share the same tracks for a stretch. Not uncommon in big-city transit systems.

Those multiple lines you are seeing, are actually trams that go underground in that part of the city. All the trams lines converge underground at the same point so they are effectively a metro service of a brief part of their journey- a tram tunnel.
