I'm looking for a reasonable hotel within walking distance of the train station and old town. Any suggestions?

No idea as for where to stay as personally I don't find Ulm to be worthwhile - with exception of the cathedral. Check www.hrs.com, hotel.de, ehotel.de for good hotel rates...
