U.S. Passport w/Four Months Left on It

My family and I are going to France in July. My son's passport expires in November. I know that some countries need a passport with more than six months validity before expiration. Would this be a problem for entering France? Thank you.

Probably not BUT it will be totally dependent on the immigration officer reviewing the passport. Generally three months is adequate. If going in July, you have plenty of time to get it renew so why not renew it? We always renew our passport within the last year. Why take a chance?

Ken, both the U.S. State Dept and French Consulate websites used to state that US Passports needed three months validity. When I went to verify that, it appears that language has been removed from both sites. So passports simply need to be valid for the duration of your stay. Other EU countries have done the same over the past few years. Germany and the UK also only require that passports simply be valid for your stay.

Thank you, Michael. I would rather not renew it until after our trip because we need to save every dime we can.

From the US Department of State: "Q:How long is a passport valid and when should I renew my passport? a:If you were over age 16 when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 10 years.
If you were age 15 or younger when your passport was issued, your passport is valid for 5 years. The Issue Date of your passport can be found on the data page of your Passport Book or on the front of your Passport Card. If possible, you should renew your passport approximately nine (9) months before it expires. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met."

Darcy, those are just general guidelines. At the State Dept. site the specific entry/exit rules for each are listed for each country. If a passport validity rule exhibits it gives you the exact number of months.
