Two week Spain itinerary. Comments?

So, after much research and discussion, my fiance and I have decided upon an itinerary for our two weeks in Spain. I wanted to just post it here to see if anyone might have suggestions or comments.

  • We will arrive in Madrid, rent a car from airport, and head to Segovia to spend the night.
  • From Segovia, we are heading to Soria, staying in the parador there for a night.
  • From Soria, are are going to Laguardia for 2 nights. Going to spend one day relaxing/spa, and the other day going to one or 2 bodegas.
  • From Laguardia, we are going to head up to San Sebastian for 2 nights. Check out the town one day, then do a day trip to another coastal town on second day.
  • Leave San Sebastian and head to the hills, gorges and canyons of Alquezar for 2 nights. First day we will probably relax, check out the town, etc. Second day go hiking the las pasarelas del vero.
  • Leave Alquezar and head east to Cordona where we will stay another night in a parador.
  • Leave Cordona and head to Barcelona where we will spend 5 nights. There is so much we want to see here, as well as wonder aimlessly. Then of course there are day trips to Montserrat, Girona, and Figueres.

All in all it is 14 nights. we really wanted to concentrate on 1 area of Spain instead of trying to tackle it all. We also wanted to balance it out with some cosmopolitan experiences as well as getting a feel for some remote areas. What does anyone think? To ambitious? Not ambitious enough? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dan, the only thing I wonder about is bypassing Madrid completely. It's a fascinating city, with tons of things to do, and, personally, I think that going all that way and missing it would be a crime. I'd sacrifice a couple of nights in Barcelona to be able to spend some time in Madrid, especially if you're looking for "Spain."
There are some great little roads all through La Rioja among the vinyards...part of their "wine route" series. If you want more info on some routes in the area, click here.

Thanks for the input Norm. We had talked about doing some time in Madrid while we were there, but felt that we wanted to be able to soak it up a bit more than 1 night. So instead, we decided to save it for when we go back and see things in the south (I am already sure we will be going back). Two places that we both really wanted to spend time in were San Sebastian and Barcelona. I think next time will be Madrid and Sevilla (and surrounding areas to both).

I will certainly take a look at those maps. Thanks!
