I am trveling to Munich in June & planning a two week self drive through the region. I am considering the German alpine road from Lindau to Salzburg. I would like to go to Vienna if possible. Can anyone suggest an itinary please. Do I have time for this route or should I consider other sites in Bavaria. any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Bob
I have been on most of the Alpenstraße, although not in one complete trip. It has some interesting parts, particularly from Sonthofen to Wertach and Walchensee to Kochel. However, on the whole, I think the effort to drive the entire Straße would not be justified. If you have to drive from Lindau to Salzburg, I guess you might as well take the Straße, but I would prefer to do it by bus and train so you can relax and watch the scenery.
If you're wanting the ultimate in Austrian Alpine roads, this is it: http://www.grossglockner.at/en/service/ Starting south of Zell-am-See in Tirol, the road ends up in Lienz, Austria, which is close to the Italian border. From Lienz, you can go east on good roads thru Graz and up into the Vienna area. Lindau is SE of Vienna tucked behind a lake to the West on the Hungarian border, and it's a little hard to get to on good roads. I've experienced it. I'll be back. The most beautiful place I've ever seen was on the south side of the mountains, north of Lienz.
