Is there anybody that can suggest some nice towns/sights to visit on either the German or Swiss side or a good centeral location to go from. Maybe a little night life or nice Gaust House or two for some socializing, nice view of the lake.
I don't go to Germany for night life. I can get that here without the airfare. I go for what I can't get here. If you can afford it, stay in Lindau. It's a beautiful little city on an island in the lake. There are some hotels right at the harbor. There is also Konstanz. We stayed there twenty years ago. I don't quite think I could see the lake from my room, but it was not far away.
In my experience, my ranking is: 1. Meersburg (mostly because the castle is awesome)
2. Lindau
I have been there a number of times and love it. I stayed in Meersburg and although I could not see the water from my room it was a 2 block walk. Being at the lake at sunrise is a spectacular experience. One of my favorite places in Germany. Also loved the surrounding towns.
Thank everyone for the suggestions. I've already looked at all of them and they look great. I'll leave it up to the wife to pick between Lindau and Meersburg, but looks like a win-win situation. Much thank, Hank
Not everyone cares for opera. But the lake-stage in Bregenz puts on huge, unbelievable spectacles in the summer. This was a location in a recent James Bond movie, I don't remember which one.
