Two hours in Zurich

I have two hours (and some change) at the Zurich Hauptbahnhoff. Do you have any recommendations for great, local places to eat that are within walking distance? Or, if not walking distance, a very short tram ride away! I looked at restaurants on trip advisor, but the ones they recommended close to the station are all very pricy and appear to require reservations. My boyfriend and I will arrive around 8pm (from Paris). Thanks in advance!

A pricey restaurant in Zurich...who would have ever thought??? :-) First of all you'll be in Switzerland at that point where EVERYTHING is more expensive than it should be. Second you'll be in Zurich which is one of THE most expensive cities in the world. Chances are unless you eat at McDonalds it's going to cost you more than you think it should. Even though it might be considered touristy we always enjoy the Zeughaskeller http://www.zeughauskeller.ch/ which is definitely walkable from the train station. While reservations are not required it would be very wise of you to make them.

Thanks :) I guess I just accept I'm going to spend some money and dive in and enjoy some good food, huh? The place looks great, thanks for the information!

Check out the restaurant/cafeteria at the Manor department store. It is located on the Bahnhofstrasse, a short walk or tram ride from the train station. We ate lunch there a month ago. The restaurant is excellent - great selections, salad bar, and very reasonable prices. The restaurant is located on the top floor.

"Chances are unless you eat at McDonalds it's going to cost you more than you think it should" A McDonald's combo meal in Switzerland will set you back 12 bucks. Had to resort in Geneva when I couldn't stomach $50-60 for a basic sit-down restaurant meal.

I will be here, LATE, in a couple of weeks. the James Joyce Pub Seriously, read about it: http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/specials/extraordinary_exiles/Spirit_of_Joyce_still_roams_Zurich.html?cid=12828 http://www.jamesjoyce.ch/ Found at a competitor (frommer):
"The furnishings and paneling of this pub were acquired in the early 1970s by the Union Bank of Switzerland, when Jury's, an 18th-century hotel in Dublin, was demolished. The Union Bank reassembled the bar (with slightly more comfortable banquettes) near Bahnhofstrasse to entertain business clients and named it after famous Dubliner James Joyce, who had described its decor in certain passages of Ulysses. The blackboard menu lists the daily specials (Plattes). In December, Irish stew is traditionally served. Other fare includes fish and chips, hamburgers, and fried chicken legs. Open Monday to Friday 11am to 12:30am and on Saturday from 11:30am to 6pm." Why not?

A few thoughts:
If you want cheap and pretty good, check out the Migros grocery store on Lowenstrasse. Its about a 5 min walk from. They also have an amazing ion of to-go food, chocolate and other swiss goodies. You can get there via the Bahnhofstrasse and head to the right after a few blocks. If you want to go pricier poke around in the side streets off the Bahnhofstrasse. There are a few restaurants along the Limmat river, but they're going to be pricy. If you want a little more reasonable, poke around the neighborhood just north of station. Basically head left of the tracks if you're facing the station building itself as you walk down the platforms. Just beware, the prices will be outrageous no matter where you go, so take things with a grain of salt.

One more bit of advice: Don't order fondue or raclette unless you're there in fall or winter. You'll instantly be labeled as a tourist and you'll be sweating as you're eating!
