We are considering traveling into Italy for a day. What recommendations do you have for visiting Cinque Terre? What is the best way to travel from Nice CT?
The Cinque Terre is too far from Nice for a day trip. According to viamichelin.com it's a 4-hour drive (without stops). Depending upon the departure time it takes 5 1/2 to nearly 7 hours by train.
For a smaller town, you should consider Villefranche. We stopped there briefly when we were staying in Nice, and wished we had stayed there instead of the big city. It's only a few minutes by train from Nice. While not the Cinque Terre, it has a similar level of charm.
There's enough in Nice itself for two days. If you really want to do a day trip I'd recommend St Paul de Vence and Vence - some very good 20th-century art on show.
Monaco was a very pleasant and easy day trip from Nice. Most of the little villages between Nice and Monaco were nice, but nothing like the Cinque Terre. There is so much to do in Nice you may decide to never leave!
I thought Monaco, Cannes and Antibes were more pleasant and interesting than Nice, when my wife and I went there on our honeymoon. We were there for four days out of the ten we spent in France.
