Two days in Colmar

I'm going to be in Colmar in September and am trying to decide what to see in a 2 day period (consecutive.) I don't know whether to get a rental car or take the train. I've never been to Germany and would like to cross the border on this trip. Our hotel is in Colmar, so whatever we do, we'll be coming back there for the night. How about one day on the wine route and one day in the Black Forest; doable? Open to other suggestions, too. Thanks!

Colmar is a very charming and interesting town - to stay there and not explore it, doesn't make a lot of sense. I was there for 3 full days and spent one day exploring Colmar and the remaining 2 days driving the wine road. Personally, I think you need and want a car.

Thanks, Carolyn. I'm actually going to be there for a week, but we have two days to wander around the area. Do you have any suggestions for special stops along the wine road?

Thanks for the advice, Chris. I'll look into the car rental. Any suggestions on towns/sites to see on the wine route?

Robi, On our first trip, we spent three nights (two days) near Colmar and were completely rained out. We had a rental car and spent one day exploring the wine route, visiting the villages when we had a break in the rain. The other day we tried to visit Colmar but it was just too wet, so we took a drive through the Black Forest all the way up to Baden Baden and back. So, it is doable but we've been back to Alsace twice since then and there really is enough to keep you busy for both days while you are in Alsace ... and we haven't even been to Strasbourg, yet! I would strongly suggest renting a car when you are there, we find it makes exploring more flexible and like that we can stop-and-go when and where we want. Enjoy your trip!

Strasbourg and the cathedral. Easy day trip by train.

My wife and I were there last month for 3 days. No car, took the train from Zurich. Spent most of our time wandering the city, etc. Also rented bikes from the train station and saw 3 of the towns along the wine route. Very easy without car.

Thanks for the information, folks! Larry - what towns did you visit? I'm pretty sure we'll rent a car; I can drive manual but have a knee injury and am not looking forward to that. So, we will be able to stop along the wine route. Are there any chateaux/castles of note in the area that are worth visiting?

We visited Wettolsheim, Eguisheim (must see!) and Husseren. Also while at Husseren we biked up to a trailhead for the Camino de Santiago. Very cool.
