This is what led me to believe you were trying to get three people in a room for two. Sorry if I misunderstood,,,but thats what it sounded like.

stacey,, you would be making a big mistake if you tried to sneak your child in a double room and most hotels in France would most definately consider a 7 yr old a person,, not a freebie.There are also strict fire codes that allow only so many persons per sq metre in hotels,, and a hotel could and many would ,, either send you away,, or charge you for a triple if you showed up with the child and tried to plead ignorance.

Find a cheaper place to stay where you don't have to lie( which is what you are really asking us how to do).

There is a place that seems to be 1/2 hostel 1/2 hotel ,, I haven't stayed there , but area is good. Look it up,, its called "Hotel Perfect" .. you could also consider looking at hostels, some do have private family rooms.

I never meant that I would sneak nor lie!!!! What do you do on some of the websites that only offer single or double yet they give you the option for additional people? Do we rent two rooms and not sleep together? That is all that I am asking! Not how to cheat the system. Please do not think that is what I am saying. I want to got Paris as family not split to two rooms because he cannot sleep in the bed with us.

What you do when you make the reservation is tell them you have two adults and one child. Very simple. From your original post, it sure sounded like you were trying to get two and half people in a double room.

I didn't get the impression you were asking how to sneak your child in...your question "would it be proper to ask them if it were ok to stay in a double" is reasonable, and I would say yes. As Steve already wrote, I would call them and speak to someone there.

I have emailed some hotels and their responces have been different.

Stacey, I totally understood your question and thought it was perfectly reasonable. You wouldn't ask if it would be proper to ask them if it were ok to stay in a double if you were trying to sneak your child in. There are Paris hotels that will bring a cot into a double room for a child, because I've done that (at Hotel du Pantheon for one). They did not charge extra. Every hotel in Paris is different, and they all do things differently and in their own way. That's why I think calling them is the best way to find out what a particular hotel may or may not allow.
