Any thoughts as to which country is overall the better one to visit. Is one a lot cheaper to visit than the other? Croatia is by the water which is appealing.
Have not been to Turkey but just got back from Croatia. The seaside towns, islands, and Istria are great, but if you can get inland to the Plitvice lakes that is a real jewel. Food and Sobes are good and cheap. You can see pictures and details (in a spreadsheet) at my personal blog. Turkey is high on my list though.

I haven't been to Turkey but did go to Croatia last year. I arrived by boat to Split and took a bus down to Dubrovnik. Beautiful, beautiful scenery down the coast. Dubrovnik was grand but there are a lot of tourists. I also went to Plitvice lakes. I would dearly love to go back. The water is such a beautiful blue, the coast spectacular. I didn't find it as expensive as Italy or Austria. Plitvice Lakes was by far, the most beautiful place I have ever taken pictures at. I spent the day in Split.
The Diocletian's Place is wonderful to see and walking around the outdoor market is worth seeing.
Hope this helps
I have been to both. Istanbul and Ankara in Turkey (not by the coast) and the coastal area in Croatia.
I like Croatia because I'm a "country" person more than a "city" person. I'd rather be in wilderness than in a city. I think Croatia is cheaper, but I was there in October (off season). Both are outstanding destinations - it just depends on what you like. I loved walking along the sea in Croatia and being almost all alone (in October).
