I am planning to stay at Hotel Amadeus April 18-21, and want to see the tulips. Is biking to Keukenhof from Haarlelm advisable? Is renting a bicycle easy to do? Suggestions?
The terrain is completely flat, but its a little far if you don't regularly cycle long distances.
I only ride once a week-10 days, up a hill ~ 5 mi and back to get into/stay in shape, but assume on the flats and stopping for photos it might not be too bad, but don't know the routes/distances to make it fun.
The distance is very nearly exactly 16 km which is 10 miles. Most can be done on cycle routes very nearly straight, south south west near the N208 route. The route is basically level but there are some rises and falls. Not long after leaving Haarlem the route passes through typical polder land, some wooded but not all by any means. If you are a decent cyclist (or can be one by April) you can branch out in the vicinity of Keukenhof to cycle through many various fields of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. The VVV (Dutch for Tourist Information office) next to the Station in Haarlem (and likely the one next to Amsterdam Centraal) sells an excellent cycling map of North Holland and a matching one of South Holland. If you are too pooped to cycle back there are easy train connections - you need a ticket for the bike too. >>>Fiets - do you want to chime in?
Hiring a bike is easy
