In my reading up on Switzerland for our trip last week, I noticed that one well known guide book said wearing ballcaps was NOT a cool thing to do there and - in fact- is frowned upon. My husband likes to wear his, so is there any truth to that?? What if he wore one with a Swiss soccer logo or something? Trivial, but...
I wouldn't wear a hat while sitting down in a restaurant, other than that, can't think of a situation where caps would be frowned upon. I'm curious as to what exactly that guidebook says. There will be all types of North American and Euro-style leisure wear on display among tourists, and no one will really care. Some may privately think that baseball caps look silly, but then you probably think that capri pants look silly on men (very common in Europe).
I have never heard of such a thing??? I have worn baseball caps frequently in my many trips to the country since 1997 and no local has chased me out of town with a pitch fork;) Photo of Roger Federer wearing a ball cap: http://media1.santabanta.com/full1/Lawn%20Tennis/Roger%20Federer/roger-federer-23a.jpg
No truth to it at all, unless he plans to wear the ball cap at a Michelin-style restaurant. Otherwise, hardly anyone will even notice. What guide book was this? That sounds more like the personal prejudice of the author than any actual Swiss social custom.
One of the "F" guide books...can't recall which. I thought it odd as well. Thanks all, my husband appreciates it!
Just to add, a couple of years ago i was walking near Interlaken West station and the local tourist board were handing out baseball type hats in a rather nice blue print fabric. I have mine know hanging in my hall.

Swiss soccer logo Swiss football? Never heard of it. Tennis, yes. Formula 1, yes - barely. Football? If he wants to wear an Aggie cap ;-} or a Gig 'Em Horns cap nobody will care. They will know he's an American tourist long before he puts on his cap.
I'm not convinced that the Federer in that photo is completely representative of tourists....

Switzerland is might not have the big soccer clubs like England or Germany but they are part of the game. In fact, they hosted the European Cup 2008. Very successfully I might add.
Amen Beatrix. In fact according to the latest FIFA rankings England is ranked 14 and Switzerland is just one notch below at 15. Also by law I'm obligated to state the following: For the next eight months the USA is officially better at soccer than England, France and Italy: http://tinyurl.com/kpm7qpb
My daughter lives in Switzerland and constantly tells me not to wear a ball cap.....so last year we went out with her friends, most of them Swiss and in their 30s, and most of them were wearing ball caps, I had to laugh. I just don't think she likes my choices in fashion!!
