Greetings! My family is going to Bonn to visit our foreign exchange student that spent 5 months with us in America. We will be there Dec. 15-21 and would like to take a day trip outside of Bonn. What is a MUST see? We will have a 6 year old in tow! Many thanks!
I don't know about Bonn in particular, but most of Germany has wonderful Christmas markets at that time of year. Think nutcrackers, gluwein and often, ice skating.
Bonn is located along the Rhine river, an area known for wonderful castles. When my kids were 7 and 10 we drove up and down the Rhine, 'castle hunting'. We actually toured Marksburg Castle and the kids loved it, especially the creepy dungeon. The tour guide let my son open the fortress door at the end of tour with a huge key. And we bought a souvenir wooden 'sword' to take back with us.
I was thinking about the boat ride down the Middle Rhine Valley as well. However, do some research first as the schedules are very limited in the winter - for the boats as well as for the castles.
A trip to Cologne might be fun as well and it's close by.
