Trips from/around Paris in June-July

I'll be flying into Paris around the last week of June. Would like to spend that week seeing other cities. Open to other countries if they are close enough and budget friendly. I'm interested in day trips or trips that would take 2-3 days. I've been to France twice, been to Paris, Normandy, Monet's garden, Versailles, Angers, Nantes, Rennes, parts of Bretagne.
My dream is to see the cote d'azur, but my french friends say it's very expensive. Plus it's far from Paris. Also I've heard it's not the safest place. Any comments on how feasible it would be to get there from Paris? And how much $ should I budget for a few days, including transportation costs and lodging? Thanks! Edit: after that first week it'll be 2 weeks in Paris with friends FYI.

The south coast,, yes , perhaps expensive, but I have a hotel booked a block from the beach in Nice for 100 euros,, and will daytrip to Monaco , Eze etc from there. Safety,, well I wouldn't even listen to a person who labels an entire REGION as unsafe. Thats ridiculus. As for timing,, a train from Paris to Nice is 5-6 hours, so basically a day gone there,, my thoughts would be with only a week on the ground I might look somewhere else. I haven't been but many here rave about the Alsace region,, a bit of Germany in France,, or a 3 hour or so train will take you to Amsterdam.. or 2.5 hours on the Eurostar will take you downtown to downtown London..

TC, southern France is beautiful, totally different "vibe" than Paris. It's your vacation and your dream, do it. In Nice, I can recommend the Hotel Suisse, good location, great views. Did not consider the area to be unsafe. To save some travel time, you might want to fly in to Nice and out of Paris.

Do it. You, like many others before and after you will probably find you love it. Follow your dream. my french friends say it's very expensive Doesn't have to be. You need to plan and set priorities. I have never found it more expensive than Paris or Provence (the western part of Provence so Ed doesn't whack me for saying the Riviera is not in Provence). I regularly stay in Monaco or Nice. I'm not loaded and don't pay too much, but I plan. Plus it's far from Paris Pah. Tish. Rubbish. Is LA far from Oakland? A fast TGV whizzes you there in no-time. Then it creeps along the coast (sit on the right) so you can view it in all its splendour. Also I've heard it's not the safest place
Absolute pig merde. Safest for what? I can name you, from personal experience, dozens of places in the Bay Area I'd rather not go than anywhere on the Cote d'Azur. Tell your French friends to get a life.

I recommend going to Nice and taking daytrips from there. There are countless hotels in all price ranges in Nice and intersting things to see there as well as good daytrip options. I stayed at Hotel Durante last year. It is very close to the train station in a quiet cul-de-sac. Not expensive; good breakfast which costs extra. While there I took a commercial daytrip by van to 6 area villages. Lunch in St Paul de Vence was memorable.
