Tripods in Notre Dame

Hi, I have a quick question can you set up a tripod in Notre Dame or other cathedrals, churches in Europe?

I don't recall ever seeing a sign in any cathedral specifically prohibiting tripods. Some do not allow any photography, some only prohibit flash photography. I guess if there was a service in process or the church was particularly crowded, an attendant may ask you to not to use it, but that's about it.

There's an urban myth that surfaces periodicaly concerning the fact that tripods are, in fact, banned by some kind of ordinance everywhere in Paris. It's just a myth.

Andrew, In my experience, many Churches / Cathedrals DO have signs prohibiting use of Tripods and especially Flash photography. This is not a "universal rule" throughout Europe, but varies between locations. The reasons for this are understandable. There are a lot of people wandering about, and having a Tripod set-up would be an obstruction for others. There's also the possibility of someone knocking it over, taking your Camera to a hard stone floor! You might be able to manage with a Monopod, but it's probably safe to assume that you won't be able to use a Tripod in many of these locations. Cheers!

Thanks everyone! Maybe I'll try a monopod, and it is certainly understandably why a tripod might be prohibited.
