Trip to Scotland

First time visit - key places are Iona, Campbell Clan area, Hadrian's Wall. Probably Edinburgh & Glasgow since we are coming all the way. And we are considering Isle of Lewis - the revival area. We love being in the land and living and breathing there. Any suggestions as to best way to route ourselves, we will fly into either E G or London (do train to Hadrians then to G or E and rent car), would be greatly appreciated. Is there someplace that you say you just have to go to? Thank you, Carmel

Scotland is full of fabulous places to visit. You won't be able to see them all. It is hard to advise you without knowing what you like to do. But here are a few thoughts. Edinburgh is my favorite city in the world. It is beautiful and full of history. I would start there. I personally am not crazy about Glasgow, but I don't like cities that much unless they have lots of history.

You might want to head over to Oban, a town on the coast with easy access to some of the islands. You could take the two island or three island tour to see Iona. I recommend the three island tour that includes Mull, Iona and Staffa. It makes for a long day, but it's a great one.

From Oban you could head up to Skye, which is my favorite island. It's is extremely beautiful and a great place to hike. From Skye you can get a ferry to Lewis and Harris. On Saturdays you can take the ferry, catch a bus tour of both islands (really one island with two names) and catch the ferry back. It's a very long day, but again, a great one.

From Skye, you could head over to Inverness, There's lots to see around Inverness -- it' a great base to see the highlands. I'm not sure where the Campbell Clan area is -- is that Glencoe? If so, it's close to Oban.

I think you would need more than two weeks to see anything else, and you didn't say how long you had.

I have not been to Hadrians wall. I would love to see it, but unless you have lots of time, you might want to save it for another trip.

Thank you so much for the input. Really appreciated the information about the islands. Now we have an invitation to Northumbria to see some friends for a day so that adds on time also.
