Trip to Munich in Late February, Early March

My wife and I will be flying into Munich on Friday, February 27th. We will need to be in Innsbruck by about mid-day on Sunday, March 1st to pick up a rental car. From there we are driving to the Tirolean Alps to the small town of Vipiteno, Italy. That will be our base for a week of skiing.

My question is for Friday and Saturday before we need to be in Innsbruck. We were looking for some ideas on where to spend these two nights. We made a similar trip last year (although we had 7 nights as opposed to 2) where we saw Munich, Neuschwanstein, Salzburg, and Vienna. We really enjoyed each of these areas but would like to see something different. Obviously we don't have a lot of time so we are thinking it would be best to spend the two nights in one area that is conveniently located by rail to both Munich and Innsbruck. Our fall-back plan is to spend the two nights in Munich with a possible daytrip to Nurnberg, but we welcome any travel suggestions. Thanks.

There are so many things to see in Bavaria. Kind of depends on what you like.

Burghausen, on the border with Austria, between Passau and Salzburg, has an interesting castle.

You could do Rothenburg in a day, but I would make it an overnight trip.

On the other hand, you could go down to Oberammergau for two nights and see Linderhof, then go on to Innsbruck via Mittenwald the next day.

Hi Jamie,

I'd suggest staying in Mittenwald, Germany or Hall in Tirol, Austria, just a few miles from Innsbruck. Both are very easy by rail, both are beautiful towns in scenic area's and both are close to Innsbruck. We have visited Vipiteno/Sterzing a few times and love it.
