Trip to Austria and Budapest

I have created an itinerary for my trip to Austria and Budapest and wanted to get some input on it. We fly in and out of Vienna. It is as follows:
Day 1 - Take train from Vienna to Budapest
Day 2 - Budapest
Day 3 - Spend day in Budapest and take night train to Hallstatt
Day 4 - Arrive early in Hallstatt, leave later in day for Salzburg
Day 5 - Salzburg
Day 6 - Salzburg - afternoon to Melk
Day 7 - Melk - train to Vienna
Day 8 - Vienna
Day 9 - Vienna
Day 10 - leave for US

Any input on my itinerary. Does anyone know if you can take a night train from Budapest to Hallstatt?

Thank you for your help.

Overall a good plan with one exception - I would not want to get on a train for a 3 hr ride following a flight from the US. It seems like you have 3 nights in Vienna - if so, I would spend the first 2 nights of the trip in Vienna and also the last night prior to your flight home.

But that is what I would do - if you can stand it, go for it.

Edit - if you haven't booked tickets, why don't you fly into Budapest and fly out of Vienna - this will avoid the backtracking.

I would support what Arnold says. DO Vienna the first couple of days, don't wear yourself out with the train ride. Sounds like a good plan for a quick trip otherwise.

They used to sell tickets from Vienna to Budapest that included public transportation in Budapest. They were really cheap, and worked well. Been 10 years though.

Maybe someone knows if they still offer them?
