Toilet report: nastiest bathroom was in bus/train station in Berchtesgaden. For this I paid 0.30 euro!!! The toilet paper is generally thicker than we see in the US, so you don't need as much. Train bathrooms are like airplane bathrooms, but are generally fairly clean and free. The men's room at Hohenschwangau reportedly had no seats. There was one square toilet reported, but I don't remember where it was. Otherwise, mostly free, "normal" bathrooms.
Packing light: 4 of us took this trip with 4 Jansport daypacks and one 20-inch duffle. Making the kids schlep their own stuff kept the souvenir spending and clothes shopping moderate, more than any harping about budget that I could have done.
Margaret, Most bus / train stations have so-so toilets. Lucky you didn't see the one in the Como train station! LOL
Rick always suggest if you see a clean one... use it... or hit the museums. McDonald/ Starbucks or any "American" eateries is a great back up too.
It's funny, my kids are so used to being told to use bathrooms when they don't really need to go that they don't even argue any more.
I'm not sure if they're just tired of arguing or whether they now realise it's better to go a little at a clean bathroom than to really have to go when only grungy toilets are available.
