I am currently in Baumholder Germany and my dtr and I want to go to Dauchau, Munich and also drive the Romantic Road.
Any suggestions on the best route?? And how far is this. It looks like it should takes us around 4 1/2 hours?

I wouldn't recommend bringing a car into Munich, though. A car here is more hastle than a benefit, and you can easily visit Dachau via train or bus. As for driving the Romantic Road... I'm of the opinion that driving this road is one of the most over-hyped experiences in Germany. Yes, it is scenic, but other than the view of Neuschwanstein at the southern end, it's no more scenic than countless other country roads in Germany. The name itself was invented by a marketing committee in the 1950s. So, although I thinks its reasonable to drive the Romantic Road if there are particular towns along the route that you want to visit, it's not worth it to go out of your way to drive it just for the name.

There are basically three main routes you could take depending on traffic (listen to AFN radio). One is Kaiserslautern via Ludwigshafen, Speyer (stop for the cathedral), Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Ulm, Augsburg to Munich. After Augsburg you could take A99 freeway towards Salzburg which bypasses Munich but passes Dachau. I'd stay at a hotel somewhere along Dachauer St. and take public transport into Munich. For hotels check with hrs.com.The second route is Kaiserslautern via Mannheim, Heilbronn, Crailsheim, Ulm, Augsburg, Munich. Freeway A7 from Crailsheim to Ulm parallels the Romantic Road so that you could also just pick the spots of the Romantic Road you really want to see like Rotheburg, Dinkelsbühl, Wieskirche etc. The third route starts like the 2nd one but from Crailsheim instead of going south towards Ulm continue onwards to Nuremberg (which is also quite worthwhile) and then turn South to Munich. All three routes are almost equally long and take around the same time.
