Hello. Husband and I are arriving in Frankfurt August 29th, departing Munich Sept. 6th. Will have a rental car. First half of our trip, I thought we would stay in Tubingen, having made our reservations, etc. But after reading about Trier, I'm interested in that area also. Second half of our vacation we will be in Bavaria. I want to see so much, but have limited time. If anyone has been to both areas, which did you prefer? I really would like to see Burg Eltz but was also told that Tubingen is a gem that doesn't get overrun with tourists. Any advice? Thanks in advance.
Kelly, We have been to Tubingen and are going to return this fall. Its a university town that has all its old buildings. It wasn't touched by the war and the old town center is beautiful. A little further you will find the town of Bad Urach, pop. about 13,000. When you walk into to old town center you'll think you went back 400 years in time. We are going to spend a couple of days here too.
Tübingen is a very attractive town that's worth a visit. But Trier has a bit more to see and is perhaps better located for outings to other interesting places. If I had maybe 3-5 days, I'd choose to see Trier, Burg Eltz, and probably Bernkastel and Cochem as well. Then, on the way to Bavaria, I'd make a one-night stop in Tübingen for a look-around. By the way, I've been to Trier on numerous occasions and never found it "overrun with tourists."
We were in Trier and would go back there is so much to see there!
I really like Trier but haven't been to Tuebingen yet.
We were just in the Mosel region, and liked Traben-Trarbach much better than Bernkastel-Kues. Trier was worth a day trip if you like Roman ruins or the good museum in town. Don't overlook the Roman amphitheater, which is out of the way, but has a bus stop and free parking, as far as I could see. Admission includes excellent bathrooms. You can visit the passages under the arena floor, too. Trier is indeed a medium-sized, touristy, dusty city, not to be compared with smaller towns like the twin-towns noted above. While at Burg Eltz (by car), we met Americans our own (late 50ish) age who had cheerfully taken the train to Moselkern and hiked an hour in the woods to the castle. They weren't sweaty or bug-bitten! Consider the Federal Garden Show (B.U.G.A.) on both sides of the Rhine in Koblenz this summer. Wine at the growers can be very reasonably priced, but the real high-end places demand appointments. Make sure your Rhine cruise is downstream, so it takes less time for the ride.
