My husband and I are going to be in the Landstuhl/Ramstein area for about a week and are wanting to do a few trips from there. We are thinking of taking the train from Landstuhl up to Trier and we are both wanting to see Bastogne as well. Renting a car is not an option for us, so train travel is what we will be doing. How hard is it to get from Trier to Bastogne by train? I tried to look up the journey on Germany's train site, but it wouldn't give me an exact price, I assume because I'm going from Germany to Belgium and mentioned two changes during the journey, one being by bus. Has anyone done this route before? Any advice?
Bastogne does not have commuter rail service. To get there via public transportation, you have to get take the train to Libramont, and catch one of the infrequent buses from there to Bastogne. I made the trip from Leuven a few years ago and it wasn't very convenient.
The WWII memorial at Bastogne is much worth a visit, but rather troublesome to reach by public transportation. There are no direct trains, and the war memorial itself is outside Bastogne city. My advice: rent a car for one day and take the opportunity to visit the beautiful American cemetary in Luxembourg where Gen. Patton is resting and to pay Luxembourg city a visit. You won't be disappointed:-) Additionally, there is a General Patton museum in the Luxembourg city of Ettelbrueck. Again, try to avoid getting to Bastogne by train or bus. You will be wasting too much time both ways. All major car rentals have offices in Luxembourg at the airport (perhaps Trier too?). Happy travel!
you might also consider the following: trier - Luxembourg-city by train then Luxembourg-city - Wiltz, in the north of the country, by train. This journey takes one hour and runs every hour. I have done it and it costs ... 1.5 EUR! Moreover, it is through a very nice countryside. Wiltz is about 15km from Bastogne. You will need to find a bus. Maybe on www.cfl.lu I cannot guarantee that it will be faster (it depends on the bus connection you can find in Wiltz). But it will be probably cheaper and nicer landscape than Trier-Lux-Arlon-Libramont-Bastogne.
Good luck
