Trier, Germany – looking for affordable hotels

I will be traveling for the first time to Trier, Germany (and the surrounding area) in July 2013. I am planning on flying to Luxemburg City, and then driving to Trier. I will stay in the area for 1 week and I am looking for suggestions for affordable hotels in the Trier area. Thanks.

I stayed at Hotel Kessler last Fall. The clerk, Philippe, was very helpful and I stayed there for less than 60 Euros/night. Breakfast was included. It was a clean, basic room but my philosophy is that lodging only needs to be adquate as I don't plan to spend much time in the room. This room was a cut above average. I traveled by train but they do have parking available. The best way to find it is to look for signs pointing the way to the Karl Marx house which is just a few doors away. There are Roman ruins less than half an hour's walk away in many directions. There is a small grocery store at the end of the block and restaurants minutes away. My wife and I will stay there if/when we can vacation in Germany again.

We loved Trier. So much history there. Do try to visit the Landesmuseum. It was awesome. Don't recall the name of the hostel where we stayed. We took the city tour and a cruise on the river. We spent 3-4 days there and was busy every day. Emjoy!

I stayed two years ago and can recommend the Aulmann hotel in central Trier (http://www.hotel-aulmann.de/). It's good value for money, in the pedestrianised shopping area and is within walking distance of most of the Trier sites. If you are planning to travel a lot in the country around, however, you may want somewhere closer to the station or with easier vehicle access.

If you are looking at economy, you might want to consider the youth hostel which is just off the main square a block or so. I stayed there. Very nice and affordable (although I don't recall the cost). But of course, you must be a person who accepts that style of accommodations. It's a personal choice but another option available in Trier. Happy Travels.

We liked the Hotel Pieper. The lady that runs it was very nice; the rooms were reasonably sized; and the breakfast spread was extensive and varied. The inexpensive fixed menu lunches were good and large but she ran out early. http://www.hotel-pieper-trier.de/ The hotel is near the train station and the city center. We traveled by train. I do not know the parking situation.
