Trier Germany is this doable?

Hi, Thinking of staying in Trier as a base to travel to Luxembourg, Diekirch to visit the National Museum of Military History and would really like to go to Bastonge. I would really like to travel via public transport but I think Bastonge would really be to far, to plan a day trip. Would it be fesable renting a car for the day? I'd really like to do Battle of the Bulge tour. Or am I pushing it? Was thinking maybe 3-4 days for this area, any help planning would be much appreciated. We are into WWII history, architecture, churches/cathedral, art. Some recomendations would be so helpful. Thanks,
Wendy

Bastogne is about an hour and a half drive from Trier. You could probably do justice to Lux City and the Museum at Diekrich in a single day if you drove, but you'd need an early start and a late finish since it's about three hours or road time total. The other problem is that you can easily use up two days in Trier alone. When you're figuring transportation costs, consider that a one-day rental might be close to fifty bucks - - if you keep the car for four days, it's going to drop to around thirty per day.

Ralph, Thanks so much. We really are in the very early stages of planning a trip for 2014. We will be flying and am thinking on doing this the first part of our trip or towards the end. Flying into or out of Frankfurt. Or perhaps Luxembourg? We do plan on flying open jaw of course. Wendy

Bastogne has no commuter rail service. The only way to get there via public transportation is to take a bus from Libramont. I have no idea how to get there from Trier, but knowing how long it takes to reach it from Brussels, I would think you're looking at a 3 hour one-way trip, at an absolute minimum. Probably easier to rent a car for the day.

Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for the great replies. I wanted to state that we're not opposed to renting a car for 3-4 days. That way we could really base ourselves anywhere and hopefully see all that we want to see. Can you rent a car in Trier? Or somewhere else you'd suggest? Thanks again,
Wendy

Kayak.com says just about every rental outfit has an outlet in Trier. Pick which ever one has the best deal. Rent it somewhere else in Germany if you want and the price will probably be about the same. Just keep the pickup and drop off in the same country or you pocketbook is going to scream.

Luxembourg isn't that cheap. If you're flying to Trier from elsewhere in Europe, it's worth looking into Frankfurt-Hahn airport, which is misleadingly named if you're travelling to Frankfurt but actually quite convenient for Trier and the Mosel valley (bus connection to Trier 1 hour).

I think for a short amount of time to see those sights a car would be the most efficient way to get around, provided as Ed said you pick up and drop it off in the same place. Second the recommendations to fly into Frankfurt Hahn, although the "real" Frankfurt airport isn't too far away either - you can take the train to Trier in about 3 hours, or rent a car in Frankfurt and drive through the Mosel. If you have the time and you do fly into either Frankfurt airport, consider stopping at one of the many beautiful small towns on the Mosel and/or Burg Eltz on the way back to Frankfurt. If you're into art, that's another reason to go to Frankfurt am Main, it has some of the most amazing art museums in Europe.

Thanks Sarah, I'm thinking I want to plan this at the end of our trip and maybe leave from Frankfurt (main) airport or Duesseldorf or even Luxembourg? Not sure yet about this. We been to the Rhine and Burg Eltz (stunning Castle) beautiful area and now we would like to see the Mosel area. Like I said we are at the very early stages of planning. We don't like being rushed and really want to enjoy the area hence that is why I asked if what we want to see is do-able. If not we can come back another time. One thing we want to see for sure is the National Museum of Military History my husband has mind set on that. If we can to Bastonge great but won't be heartbroken if we don't. Thanks again for all of your help. Wendy

Thank you all so much for all your replies. This really helps.. Now does anyone have any hotel/pensions you would recomend? Like I've said before we aren't opposed to renting a car so we really can base ourselve anywhere. Any where you'd recommed that is centered to what we want to do/see? Thanks,
Wendy

It's been about two years since I went there, but I can recommend the Hotel Aulmann for Trier (www.hotel-aulmann.de/), which is good value and very central. It's a bit of a walk to the station though, so if you're doing a lot of train travel I've seen good reviews for the Hotel Romischer Kaiser which is much closer to the station.
