Trier Germany

We will be staying in Luxembourg for three days and we will have a car. My parents and I were thinking about driving from Luxembourg to Trier on out first day for a little while because we heard there are ruins there. Is Trier worth visiting?? Any other places not in Luxembourg should we hit from here?? Thanks!!

Brendon, Trier is a great place to spend a day maybe two. It has Roman ruins, medieval and baroque architecture. It has an amphitheater, not as awe inspiring as the Colosseum in Rome but it's worth an hour or two. The Hauptmarkt is very nice too.

We spent several hours wandering around Trier, epecially the area around the Porta Nigra. Amazing! We also visited Echternach in Luxembourg near the German border. A lovely little town center and great place to spend an hour or so.

Ruins tend not to excite me terribly, but the Porta Nigra just barely makes Trier interesting enough to be worth going out of your way to visit. And since you will come from nearby Luxembourg City, it wouldn't involve a huge time commitment, so why not see it? BTW, wherever you drive next... make sure to top off the tank in Luxembourg. By far the cheapest fuel prices in this part of Europe.

I like Trier a lot. The Porta Negra is great but only one piece of the ruins in Trier. There is also a Basilica, Cathedral, bath and ampitheater ruins - the bulk of which are across town (walking distance) from the gate. The town itself and the Mosel in general are nice too, not nearly as crowded as similar Rhine destinations.
