Hi - I’m taking the RS GAS tour In Sep. Traveling the day before the tour starts so will have part of that day plus the next day until the tour starts at 5 p.m. I’ve done some preliminary research on Trier, Germany and will read Rick’s guidebook, but just wondering if anyone who has been there has recommendations for special things to see or do. Appreciate any help.
Everything you can, and you still won't see it all. Great place.
I did GAS last year. The group made a stop in Trier for lunch and some touring of the market square, Porta Nigra, cathedral etc. Seems like we spent about 3 hours in Trier.
Eric - I think they changed the itinerary for the GAS tour - last year I believe it started in St. Goar - this year it starts in Trier & we stay there for 2 nights (3 with the extra night).
We were in Trier for a day trip and loved it. Definitely recommend Museum of Roman Antiquities, Porta Nigra, and shopping in the central square. Great place to visit as others have stated

Sure enough, as you noted, they've changed the itinerary for the GAS tour. We started in St. Goar last year. St. Goar was just okay from my standpoint, but nearby Bacharach was very special. It makes me wonder whether Herr Jung may have retired from guiding groups in RS groups. The afternoon in Bacharach with Herr Jung was a special part of the GAS tour last year.
Eric - thanks for responding. I googled Herr Jung and it sounds like he was an excellent local guide. Sorry that we'll miss Bacharach. This will be my third RS trip and I've been impressed by the quality of the tour directors and guides. The tour member feedback for the GAS tour is consistent with the positive experiences I had with the tours in France. Really looking forward to it!
Donna - Have a great time.
Don't miss goint to a concert in Salzburg, a luge ride near Neuschwanstein and the Sacher Torte in Vienna!
Thanks everyone - I added your recommendations to my "to do" list.
My wife and I were in Trier in spring '06 and had a lovely day. It's a great town in particular for traveling history buffs. There is the Colosseum, a grassy take on the Rome's equivalent, and the Karl Marx birthplace and museum. Also check out the fine Irish pub.
Brian - thank you. Sounds like Trier will be a good first stop in Germany!
Donna -
Absolutely, absolutely highly recommended. Trier is the oldest city in Germany. The Haupthmarket is considerer one of the finest old squares in Germany. The Porta Nigra (old gate) is the best preserved Roman structure in Germany. The Church of St. Gangolf, the Basilika (Main Protestant Church) and the Dom are beautiful churches. The Imperial Baths and Amphitheatre are also quite nice; the latter is the oldest Roman construction in Trier; construction starting around 100 A.D. Also the Imperial Palace is quite beautiful. You can see the home/statue of Karl Marx; regardless of politics a man who undoubtedly "changed the world." In a word: Go!
Richard - thanks for your suggestions. Looks like there will be a lot to keep me busy in Trier!
