I don't know anything about campervans but if you can get it in Frankfurt, I'd go down the Romantic Road, spend 1 night in Rothenburg and then go on down to Bavaria. There are some great places all around Bavaria (all listed in Rick's books).

You might want to go on over to Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Vienna and then back to Munich for Octoberfest and fly back from there.

Are you going to drive to Germany? Will you be traveling thru Belgium or where would you enter the country?

A campervan (not even fully sure what it is, I assume it's something like a VW Caravelle) is certainly not something you can just pick-up when you happen to fly in. Therefore do make a reservation as early as possible (also since September still is peak season). Are you talking about EI's Frankfurt or Ryanair's? Generally speaking Frankfurt is a good hub for travels thru Southern Germany and there are many camp sites down by the river outside of Frankfurt. Also I assume you'd have to start equipping yourselves with groceries, water etc. where you'd have plenty of choices and therefore low prices in the Frankfurt metro area.

Caroline, if you want a great Oktoberfest experience, you might try Salzburg, Austria, which holds theirs on the third weekend of September (or at least they did in 2003 when we were there). It was held in the center of the old city, within about 100 feet of the hotel where we stayed, and it was great fun.
