We will be travelling in France the first two weeks of May and we don't want to rent a car as we are avid Eurail riders. I now see after reading various travel books that a car seems to be necessary to see the Dorgonne area. Can it be done without a car or is it not worth the trouble. Also, same question for the Provence area. Thank you.
You need a car to explore the Dordogne and Provence countryside, where many of the joys of these regions are. You can get to both regions by train, but once there you'll be limited without a car. But I guess it depends on where you want to go?In Provence, there's regular train service connecting some of the cities/towns such as Orange, Avignon, Arles, and Nimes. But the railroad tracks don't go into the Provence countryside, you'll need a car, to do that you'll need a car, to sights such as Pont du Gard, Les Baux, Cote du Rhone wine area, Camarargue, etc. Some travelers do both--for example, sleep in Arles and see Avignon and other cities by train; then rent a car to explore the countryside.
