Traveling from Paris to Nice - suggested itineraries/home bases?

We are a family 2 adults and a 6 year old looking for suggestions on where to visit/stay between Paris and Nice. We'll have spent 7 days in Paris and then have another 6 days until we fly out of Nice. We're traveling in late March/early April (just before Easter) and are open to either renting a car or train travel. Our goal is to experience as much as possible, but really be able to savor it and not feel rushed all the time. I would love to hear any suggestions!

We often take that same route... we are photographers and like to drive and see the small villages. We rent a car before we go ,pick it up at Orly, jump on the A6 and head south. Burgundy is lovely. there are many lovely villages and there is the Burgundy canal area. Then we get back on the A6 and head toward Provence and the Var. Although we usually head back up to Paris it is easy to go right into Nice.If you are interested I can tell you some places to stay or towns to use as a home base.Send me a PM

Use a car to give you the flexibility to wander about and explore more in depth. Do some research to decide what interests you the most: the Chateaux Country, Burgundy wine country, Roman sights, etc.
Unless you stay in a big city you shouldn't need to make lodging reservations. Visiting the Chateaux in the Loire Valley may interest a 6 year old more than other choices. I'd go for 3 nights en route and 3 on the Riviera.

You can cover a lot of ground in six days, but the more you try to see the more of those days you will spend behind the wheel or otherwise in transit.

With that in mind I suggest making no more than two stops and also making use of the train for part of your trip to save time. (Which part depends on which destinations. A car is useful to explore.) I also suggest taking the more-direct eastern route rather than swinging through SW France.

You might spend time in Burgundy, Lyon, or Provence. My guess is a six-year-old might like walking the ramparts in Beaune visiting the small chateau in La Rochepot, and visiting the Roman antiquities in Provence, but who knows?

This plan is complicated by the likelihood that you will encounter bad weather during your trip. In a city that won't matter so much, but it would put a damper on a road trip to many small villages.
