Traveling from Lindau to Fussen, Germany

What is the best car route from Lindau on Lake Constance to Fussen, Germany? Is the Alpensee a difficult route fot those not accustomed to driving in mountains?

If you are concerned about mountain driving, take the route recommended by ViaMichelin, through Kempten. There might be a few hilly areas, but nothing like mountains.

I have made a number of trips by train from Lindau to Immenstadt, on a route roughly parallel to the Alpenstrasse. That route is pretty flat, just a little hilly around Oberstaufen.

I have also made two round trips by bus from Sonthofen to Füssen along the Alpenstrasse. The only mountainous section on that route is a switchback road up the face of a mountain from Hindelang to Oberjoch. If you were coming down, you might worry about your brakes, but going up it is no big deal. That route is definitely worth it for the scenery.

Better yet, ditch the car and take the train via Kempten to Pfronten and the bus from there to Füssen, or take the train to Sonthofen and the bus from there via Hindelang to Füssen. Let the bus driver worry about the mountain road and enjoy the view.

My first (and last) experience of mountain driving was in Switzerland across the Gotthard Pass. I've always been afraid of heights as in standing too close to a ledge or things like that...but NEVER driving.

Well on this ride there were no guardrails and only small concrete/stone markers along the edge of the road about every 5 or 10 feet - the markers were only about 2 feet high and 8-10 inches wide. That's ALL that seperated me from the plunge over the side, and I was actually holding onto the steering for dear life. I "had" to look at the road, but I just became petrified when I happened to glance over to the side while driving. I've never experienced anything like that before, and I don't every plan on experiencing it again. Trains for me!!!

Thank you for the information. None of my guide books discussed traveling in this part of Germany. We usually take the train when we travel, but we were advised by friends who have visited Germany and people who have lived there to try an automobile this trip. Depending on the weather and the time of day, we'll probably try the Alpensee. I always go for scenery!
