Hello, We will be traveling from Budapest to Munich by train and need some help, please. We are leaving Budapest for Vienna, staying 3 days, then on to Salzburg for 2 days, then on to Munich, where we stay 2 days, then pick up a rental car to go to Oberammergau and that area. My question is..is there a train ticket that allows stopovers in those cities, or should the tickets be purchased point to point? Tried to search on the bahn.de website, but it doesn't show stopovers. Do we purchase the tickets all the way from Budapest to Munich, or is that even possible?
All those cities are on the same line and can be traveled easily to one another. Perhaps a more seasoned traveler can chime in, but it's my understanding that tickets are purchased point-to-point, and are cheaper if you buy them in person on the day of travel, which I almost always do unless I'm traveling on a weekend or in the case of last year, had a broken leg. Of course, you are not guaranteeing yourself a seat unless you purchase a seat reservation, but if you don't mind possibly standing, that's the way to go, especially on the relatively quick 2 hour ride from Vienna to Salzburg.
Your options are to buy tickets point to point, buy a Eurail pass covering Hungary/Austria/Germany, or buy a Eurail pass covinger Hungary/Austria and then purchase tickets on to Munich. I'm not entirely sure the passes will work because it looks like you might need to buy them for 4 or 5 travel days, which is more than you'll need, then again you could price it out and see...
