Which cities in Germany are the closest to Brussel by train? Would like to combine Christmas markets in both countries. Thank you

Aachen would be the closest German city to Brussels. Closest large city would be Köln.

Trier is famous for its Christmas markets and it is the oldest city in Germany at the top of the Moselle Valley. Really pretty. Christmas markets are nice. Christmas markets are also really nice in Luxembourg.
I spent time at the Christmas market in both in 2005 and enjoyed the Luxembourg one more.

Have been on to bahn.hafas.de and found that Aachen is the closest, as someone mentioned, Cologne second and Luxembourg third with Trier fourth.
All have Christmas markets so it is a matter of choice. We liked Luxembourg and think that it would be beautiful at this time of year. However, in winter, and we have been there in winter, obviously, it loses some of its shine so somewhere else with bigger Christmas markets might be of more interest to you.
