We will be traveling by train from Paris into Switzerland in March. Does anyone have advice on what is the best route to travel. Should we travel from Paris to Lyon and then on to Geneva? Or Paris to Beaune and on to Lausanne Switzerland? Please any advice would be helpful. Thank you, Debbie
Everything depends on where you final destination in Switzerland is. Head over to the Swiss Rail web site www.sbb.ch/en plug in Paris and your destination and it will give you the most efficient route.
Thank you Michael--that's good advice. I am in the middle of planning my route. What is your opinion on the traveling through France sightseeing wise? We will heading to the Berner Oberland region and then down to Cinque Terra and Florence, Italy. Any more suggestions?
Debbie
Lyon is a good place to see but you do understand, right, that you don't have as much flexibility with route selection by rail as by car. I mean, you can go to Lyon but you'd have to have tickets Paris to Lyon, and then separate tickets Lyon to Interlaken. It will be coolish in northern and central France where you will be. And of course the Berner Oberland will still be in the midst of winter in March.
I was hoping Lyon was the route to take--- I'd like to spend some time in Lyon. But only if going in that direction makes sense. Ya, I plan to dress in layers -- France will be cool, Switzerland will be cold and Italy will be warmer. Thanks K.

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about the routing...go to the places you're most interested in. France has the largest high-speed train network in the world. From most any major city there will be a train headed in the direction of Switzerland. This is why I love taking the trains in Europe:)
Just so you're aware, at the time you plan to visit Switzerland, the Berner Oberland is almost entirely devoted to winter sports (but personally, I think that's all the more reason to visit at this time!). None of the hiking activities described in Rick's books or by travelers on this website will be possible, and the waterfalls will be either frozen or barely a trickle. You shouldn't have problems visiting the Jungfraujoch or Piz Gloria, however- after all, James Bond visited Piz Gloria at the height of winter!
Thanks to everyone for your advice and insight. Your answers were very helpful.
Happy Travels to all! Sincerely, Debbie
There is now a TVG (fast train) to Geneve from Paris Lyon. 3 hours and 22 mins
I think that high speed train through Lyon and on the Geneva is the way to go. Thanks for the suggestion.
