Hi, I have traveled these areas before by train, but wonder how scary it will be driving over the Alps in an RV? Google maps says it's 5 hours from Salzburg to Venice....is it really much longer because of mountain driving? I am trying to decide if we should just stay on the northern side of the Alps, and not venture into Italy. Thanks
Stacy there is a good book about rving in Europe, written by Patty Shore and David Campbell( or could be David Shore and Patty Campbell, sorry I read it a few years ago) and its available at most libraries or online. It will have more specific rv infor.
It takes 5 hours because.... well, they're not that close to each other. The main road artery is the Brenner Pass, which is a wide, modern autobahn.
If you use the Brenner Pass you will have the easiest route. It is basically straight and the hills are OK for heavy trucks. Because it is multi lane you can go at the speed that fits you, and it is direct. The Brenner Pass is just south of Innsbruck, which is also easy to get to from Munich. The best way between Salzburg to Innsbruck is back through Germany. I bet the 5 hours is for cars. You would expect it to be slower in an RV.
