My family of 11 are planning a trip to Germany in May 2011. We will be in Munich for several days and want to plan a day trip to Salzburg, Austria. What is the best way to get there and what are the best tours to take while there?
Julie, Could you elaborate a bit? "What is the best way to get there"? Where are you travelling from???? "What are the best tours to take while there"? What type of tours are you interested in taking? With a group of 11, I'd highly recommend pre-booking tours! You might have a look at This website for some examples of the tours that are available in the Munich area. There are some good tours available in Salzburg, but I'm not sure if they'd be able to accommodate a group of 11? Cheers!
Depending on whether you go by express or regional train, the trip from Munich takes about 1½-2 hrs. With 2 Bayern-Tickets and a Single, it would cost €79, about €7 per person round trip. German Rail also has group tickets for 6 or more persons, but overall, I don't think you can beat the Bayern-Ticket. I'm not sure what kind of historically accurate tours there are. You can visit the fortress on the hill without a tour. There are several buildings in the old town supposedly linked to Mozart. Whatever you do, don't fall for the SOM tour traps. They might be entertaining, but they are hardly authentic. Most of the sights they show you aren't actually from the movie. The authentic sights from the movie (Mirabell palace - do-re-mi steps, the convent) you can see on you own.
