Traveling alone in Barcelona

I am a female that will be in Barcelona for a week in September traveling by myself. I want to know where to stay that is safe and inexpensive. I want to be in the mix of things but I'm not a partier and do value my sleep.
Where should I stay? Area and hotel/apt? What places/areas should I avoid? I would very much like a bathroom in my room but I understand that may be hard to do under the $65 per night that I want to spend.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
