TRAVEL TO VALLEY OF THE FALLEN OUTSIDE MADRID

I will be in Madrid in February. I am planning to take a side trip to the Valley of the Fallen. I read on another site that the actual monument, etc. is approximately 3 miles past the gate. Will the bus/taxi be able to take me up to the site, or will they drop me off at the gate and I have to walk the rest of the way or hope I can hitch a ride with somebody else.

I took a tour with Pullmantur (I don't think I spelled that right though) that took us to Valley of the Fallen and El Escorial for about $75 each. We got a tour of El Escorial by a guide and a lot of commentary on the bus ride. Their office is located in Oriental Square right off Madrid Palace.
