I will be traveling to one location in Southern Germany or Austria (traveling from Switzerland to Poland) for 3 days total. What city would you recommend? Suggestions for hotel? Traveling with husband and two daughters 19 and 22.

Most trains from Zürich heading for Poland will route you through Freiburg, Mannheim, and Frankfurt then into northern Germany. You don't provide any criteria. What are you looking for? If you want a piece of old-world Germany, you might stopover in Gengenbach, between Freiburg and Mannheim near Offenburg. Gengenbach is a gem - old town walls and towers, half-timbered houses, cobblestoned streets - and it lends itself to outings into the Black Forest (maybe 40 min. to attractive Schiltach, for example, less to Hausach and the Vogtsbauernhof open air museum) and Strasbourg, FR (about 1 hour) and it's not far from attractive Freiburg (about 1 hour.) http://www.stadt-gengenbach.de/en/tourism/ http://en.vogtsbauernhof.org/ http://www.schiltach.de/ceasy/modules/cms/main.php5?setActiveLanguageId=2&cPageId=223 http://www.bensbauernhof.com/hotelbenzgengenbach.html Guests in Gengenbach and other Black Forest towns enjoy free rail travel to Freiburg and further into the BF with the free Konus Card issued by all hoteliers and B&B hosts: http://www.blackforest-tourism.com/konus

Tubingen. Oft overlooked university town with a beautiful Alt. The easy to find tourist information office can help find a hotel.

Does it have to be a city? If so, I can't think of a better one than Munich. On the other hand, if you would enjoy alpine scenery, I would recommend the Iller valley of the Upper Allgäu (near Oberstdorf). It's just around the corner from Bodensee and Switzerland.
