My husband and I can either travel to Germany the first two weeks of September, 2013, or wait until May 2014. We would not be doing any strenuous hiking but mostly sightseeing including the Rhine, several castles, Munich, Rothenburg Ob der Tauber and Salzburg . Anyone have a preference for time of year to travel to Germany?
Both seasons are beautiful in Germany. May would give you the opportunity to experience the Germans' obsession with "Spargel" - you'll see white asparagus everywhere on restaurant menus, farmer's markets and street side vendors :-)
I prefer September because it's harvest time in the vineyards. A really pretty time to be there, the weather is great. May is a good choice too, so really you can't go wrong either way.
September is fine. Done it. September might be a little warmer. May will have a bit more daylight. Either one.
We've traveled to Germany both in May and September. Both times of year are nice. We've had rain and very warm weather both times as well. I think I like September better. We traveled along the Rhine and the Mosel during September and the grapes were being harvested. The fall colors are lovely. If it were me I'd pick September just because I love to travel so much that I'd hate to have to wait until next May!
Have a great trip!
Vanessa, I'm leaning toward September to. I love to travel and think I will have a hard time waiting for another year! My husband is much more patient than I am.
We've been in both May and September and we've had the best weather in September. It's a little warmer and drier but still plenty of daylight. You will, however, as already mentioned, miss the Spargel season. But, lots of other great food and wine to keep you happy!
As far as weather, there isn't enough of a predictable difference, except to say that September is slightly drier and warmer. IF you ventured into the Alps from Salzburg, September would be a better month. As the others have mentioned- spring is Spargel and strawberry season, early fall is wine and harvest season.
September is more predictably warm and sunny. May can be lovely, it can also be cool, overcast, and rainy. I'd take September.
By all means, go ahead with your trip in September. The weather's favorable, and Europe is through with their vacations.
Going on your trip sooner is simply better.
All this talk about grapes - what about the white asparagus? Germany goes crazy in the spring for asparagus that has been mounded up while it grows so it doesn't get any sunlight - so it stays white instead of green. Salads, soups, with sauces, butter, cutlets, smoked ham or salmon! Something you don't see (or eat) here. Spring weather can be iffy - this year has been pretty cold and dark. Fall is a little more dependable for warmer, sunnier days. As far as events, they pretty much happen all year (except maybe during Lent.) You might have to look a little harder in the spring, but those Germans love to celebrate.
My theory is why wait? If you can go in Sept., by all means go. Although I absolutely love the asparagus I would not base my trip around it. Have some nice warm spatzel or goulash soup instead.
I would go with September too. Weather is a lot more predictable, and usually quite nice. Tons of festivals all year long in Germany, except for Nov. Jan. and Feb. Even Lent will have Easter egg shows happening in lots of towns and cities, but that wouldn't be in May anyway.
