I'd like to visit Beaune some time in August but I don't want to rent a car (or drive!). What is the most cost effective way to get there? I thought about flying to Zurich and then taking a train to Beaune, but I'd need to transfer trains, a thought which concerns me since I'm traveling alone and I'm elderly. Thanks for any help.
Bump. It's probably a coin toss for cost differential between Jax and Zurich or Paris. Paris is marginally closer to Beaune. There's going to be a couple of train changes no matter how you do it - - both will probably change at Dijon. On the French route there will also be a station change in Paris. I have no idea how to figure rail costs.
You'll have your choice of more departure times if you go Paris-Beaune rather than Zurich-Beaune. There are two direct regional trains/day from Gare de Bercy in Paris to Beaune. The most frequent route is a TGV from Gare de Lyon in Paris to Dijon and a regional train from there to Beaune. You can take Air France bus #4 directly from CDG to Gare de Lyon. These are highway buses and your luggage goes in the luggage bay. Buses run every 30 minutes. If you buy your ticket online, it will cost €15.00. If you buy it at CDG, it will cost €16.50. Your ticket will be good on any bus.
Thank you both very much for your replies. I feel as if I have my own travel agents! I now feel as if I can get to CDG, take a bus to the train, and the train to Beaune. How difficult will the transfer be from one train to another in Djion?
You're welcome. You will be responsible for getting your luggage on and off the trains. Can you pack light enough (one carry on-sized bag) to do that? According to the timetables, the shortest connection time you'll have in Dijon is 14 minutes (longer for most departure times). That's plenty of time, but it's a good idea to be standing at the door with your luggage when the train pulls into the station so you can the first one to get off.
Thanks again, Tim. I think I can manage my rolling bag and my travel purse. I had a problem llifting my bag (the same one) onto the train in Zurich from the Bahnhofstrasse to the airport. The train was an older one which did not have the platform which lowers. I just don't want to try that again. I guess it will depend on the train?
Jeanette, there are actually a few direct trains to Beaune from Paris, maybe one of them will work for you. The station in Dijon is not large though.
Hi, Jeanette I just did the reverse of what you are planning, Beaune to Paris. Thanks to all the wonderful advice I got on this website. Got tickets for $51/person first class on TGV with 40 mins to transfer at Dijon. You will automatically get reserved seats. You can print up the ticket at home at no charge. Go to RailEurope.com to get an idea of the schedule and the prices. The best prices are 90 days out. However, read the fine print, the tickets may be non-refundable, non-exchangeable. The trains with short transfer time will have a message in red, telling how many minutes for the transfer. Or you could take a direct trip on the local train, adding on about an additional hour to your journey, if you don't mind. When you are ready to book, check the prices on tgv-europe.com too. It just happened for me these particular tickets were cheaper on RailEurope. It was $4 more on RE but they gave me a $25 discount coupon for my second set of tickets. Bon voyage.
