We'll be travelling from Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland to Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Italy for a couple days on our way to Rome. Since those areas are both some of Rick Steve's favorites, have any of you done that route and do you have any travel tips for us? Preferred routing? Favorite places in the Cinque Terre? Thanks!
Yes I think many of us have done this route, but there's no secret easy way--both places take some getting to. Look at the Deutsche Bahn website linked in the rail section of this site, and you can search for the trip with the least amount of train changes.
From Lauterbrunnen, you will take the 22-minute ride on the Jungfraubahn railway to Interlaken Ost. From IO, you will ride for about 20 minutes to Spiez where you can transfer to the high-speed going to Milan. At Milan you change trains for a 3.0hr ride to the CT.
It's not really a preferred routing; it's the only direct routing. You are looking at at least 6.0hrs for this journey.
