Hello-we will be staying near the main Munich train station and will catch a flight at 9:20 a.m. at the airport. We are thinking of allowing an hour to get out to the airport via the train and 2 hours to check in/go through security (leaving the hotel around 6:20 a.m. or so). Is that enough time or should we plan for more? Thanks so much for your advice.
That should be ample time. During my last visit, I rode the Lufthansa bus from behind the main train station to the airport - it took 45 minutes; the train should be faster. I got there two hours before my flight - at the time more than enough time. The woman who checked in my bag told me to by-pass the cafe and walk to the supermarket in the adjoining terminal to get coffee for half the price. They also had freshly made sandwiches and pastry that I bought for my breakfast.
Whether you take the S1 Richtung (direction) Pasing, or the S8 Richtung Ostbahnhof, whichever train comes next will get you to the airport soonest. If you take the S-1, you need to board the back half of the train because the front will be uncoupled in Neufahrn and go to Freising. * I'm referring to the direction shown in the S-Bahn station itself. The direction shown on the train will probably be "Flughafen" in either case. Be careful, because the S1 from the airport comes through the station on it's way to the end of it's line in Ostbahnhof. The S8 from the airport also comes through the station on it's way to Geltendorf. Don't get on the right train in the wrong direction. In 2009, I stayed in Freising and took the bus to the airport, arriving 2 hrs before flight time. I had plenty of time to check in, go through security, etc.
Thanks so much for your posts, that is exactly what I was hoping to find out!
