My husband is leaving from Ramstein AFB and I need to fly out of a reasonably close civilian airport to get back to the States....any recommendation on the best airport to fly out of in proximity to Ramstein? Frankfurt? Strasbourg? Or????
Frankfurt. It's closer to Ramstein. A flight from Strasbourg probably goes through Paris or Frankfurt, anyway. . . . . . ¶ BTW, the train to Frankfurt from Ramstein is probably a lot cheaper, too.
Second the vote for Frankfurt. Most US (and quite a few European) carriers serve Frankfurt. You can fly direct to most major US cities from there.
There's also a Ramstein-Frankfurt shuttle bus, but check with the pax rep since it seems to be an on-again/off-again thing. Also, make sure you're headed toward Frankfurt Int'l (FRA) and not Frankfurt Hahn (HHN).
I can get flights out of either city, I'm just looking for which is easier to maneuver to get back to the airport. Sounds like Frankfurt is the consensus!
laura, I also agree that Frankfurt is a better choice. It's perhaps the largest airport on the continent and a major "hub", so it should give you a better choice of flights (and prices). Happy travels!
For €36, you can get a ticket using express trains (ICE/IC), Ramstein to Kaiserslautern to Mannheim to FRA in just over 2 hours. In fact, if you book well in advance, online, from the Bahn, you can get a Sparpreis fare for these same trains for as low as €19. . . . . . ¶ One the other hand, you can take regional trains by a more direct route via Mainz in about 2-1/2 hours. A €20 Rheinland-Pfalz-Single Ticket will get you from Ramstein to Mainz, and a €3,80 local (RMV) ticket will get you from Mainz to FRA. You can get the RL-P ticket from an automat in Ramstein and the RMV ticket at a counter in Ramstein (if they have one) or in Mainz. No advance purchase required.
I think I would take the shuttle bus that runs between Ramstein and the Frankfurt airport. With military ID, this is your cheapest and easiest way to go.
