I'll be traveling in France May 12-21 with a dear friend and would like to take a couple of day trips from Nice. Monday we'll take a bus to St. Paul de Vence and Tuesday we'd like to go to Monte Carlo stopping at Villefranche and Eze Village. Would anyone have suggestions whether we should take a train or bus. We have 3 nights in Nice and would welcome any advice. Thank you!
Susan,
I'd suggest taking the Bus. The trip from the station in Nice (Gare Routiére?) to Monaco is quite pleasant, and as I recall the fare is only about €1 (unbelievable fare!). The Bus will drop you at the bottom of the hill leading up to Monaco. From there you can either take one of the local Buses (another €1) up to the area near the Palace, or walk up if you feel energetic. If you're interested in watching the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace, it takes place at 11:55. Be sure to get there early as the crowds can be really thick, and bring a hat as the plaza is warm in the noon day sun!
From the Bus stop in Monaco, you can also take one of the local Buses to Monte Carlo, which is on a hill on the opposite side of the Bay. Note that if you're planning to visit the famous Casino, there IS a dress code.
The Bus from Nice to Monaco also passes through Villefranche, so you could probably stop there and then board the next Bus that passes through. I've never tried it, but it should be possible.
I don't have much information on travel to Eze village, but I believe there's a path from Eze sur Mer to the village. If you have a copy of the France Guidebook, I'm sure there will be directions there.
Cheers!
Between Nice and Monaco you can take either the train or bus. To get to Eze-le-Village your only choice is a bus.
I suggest that you take the bus from Nice to Eze-le-Village the first thing in the morning to beat the tour bus crowd. Then take the bus on to Monaco. Work your way back to Nice by either train or bus. The train costs a little more, but if you buy a ticket from Monaco to Nice you can stop over at Villefranche-sur-Mer at no additional charge.
Thank you all, very helpful. We will take the bus to Eze first then on to Monaco, hopefully in time to see the changing of the guards. We will return by train, stopping at Villefranche and continue on back to Nice. I did purchase a guide book and have stayed up till 3:45 AM two nights in a row. I'm a planner and this trip came as a spur of the moment surprise and only had 10 days to prepare (plus working full time) Thank you again!
You're welcome.
Bus #112 goes from Nice to Eze-le-Village and on to Monte Carlo. Bus #82 goes from Nice to Eze-le-Village. For timetables, go here.
Susan,
The road from Eze sur Mer to Eze-le-Village is really steep. When we took the number 82 minibus down it was really "exciting". If I had been in LA I would have called it an "E-Ticket" ride.
The ride on the TAM bus is much more calm.
The reason I mention this is that a previous poster suggested that it is possible to walk up. I agree that it is possible, but it would be hard work.
When you get to Eze-le-village there is one narrow steep street which goes up through the village. It is so steep that many steps are part of the street. It is quite tiring (but very rewarding) and can get quite warm.
Eze sur Mer does have a train station.
I wonder if that and Villefranche and Monaco is a bit of a stretch in one day?
A beautiful view of Villefranche bay is available from the walk around Cap Ferrat in RS book, start at Beaulieu.
When I went to Eze I was told that Friedrich Nietzche used to holiday there and walk up from Eze-sur-mer to Eze-Village every morning. I saw the path and it should probably be reserved for people who want to prove that they are uebermenschen!
Thank you all very much! We leave one week from today and are so excited! We've been best friends for 50 years and this will be our first trip together since I got married 26 years ago!
