After I read your guide on Switzerland, I found no suggestions for the older traveler who is handicaped and can not walk or hike any distance... What plans can I make when we will be based in Geneva and want to take two day trips? Jenny
Jenny, or Eugenia There are both volunteers on this Helpline who are or who helped handicapped people with various difficulties, and people who are quite knowledgeable about southwest Switzerland, Geneva, Chateau de Chillon, and Lausanne. I'm not too sure how the circles intersect though. In order that I and other volunteers can best help you, may I just ask, to kick things off, do you mean one trip of two days away from Geneve or two trips away each of one day? And, if you don't mind sharing, are you able to do any steps? Any walking on flat ground? Any short walks? Are you able to get around in a wheelchair? Are you able to sit on a train or bus? Switzerland, except perhaps the actual city area of Geneve, is not an especially flat place unfortunately. I remember Lausanne, you'll find it in the book, as a lovely place and I believe it is possible with the tram-thing and ramps to get from level to level. The tram-thing is very modern with all the modern equipment.
My husband and I just returned two days ago from a three week home exchange in Lausanne. Henry has very bad knees and has great difficulty with steps. If you will answer the questions posted by the previous writer I think I can help you. The " tram thing " is called the metro and yes, there were wheelchairs on it as well as wheelchairs on the trains with handicap bathrooms. I cannot speak about Geneva as we chose to skip seeing that city. Lausanne is spectacularly beautiful with lots of options of things to see. Boat rides on Lake Geneva would also be a great idea for you.
