Travel into Salzburg, Austria

Hello all!
I'm a student in California, and planning to travel with a class into Salzburg, Austria at the end of April. This will be my first time into Europe, so I'm a little nervous! I hope someone can direct me to the best way to get to Salzburg - whether it is by train from another city, or to fly in direct - I'm looking for some guidance! Hope you can help! thanks infinitely!

Have you tried this? Or something like taking the train into another city? (can you tell I'm nervous?)

From Munich you can travel by train to Salzburg and Inssbruck in Austria and to Chur, Switzerland ( we think) on what is called the Bayern Ticket. This ticket from Munich is good all over Bavaria (including parts of other countries that were once Bavaria). It costs aboout 28€ and is good for up to 5 people.

fly into munich and rent a car. about 1 hr from munich on the way to salzburg is the herremchimsee-largest lake in bavaria-and home of one of "crazy ludwig's" palaces. beautiful. another 2 hr drive to berchtesgarden, the most beautiful spot in germany. far cheaper to stay there and drive to salzburg which is maybe 30-40 minutes away. check out web sites for above mentioned spots.

I don't think there are direct flights from the US to Salzburg. You would probably have to change somewhere, probably Frankfurt. That's probably the least expensive. But if you fly direct to Munich, then take the train to Salzburg, the Bayern-Ticket is best. It is valid to Salzburg and to Kufstein, AT, but not to Innsbruck or Chur. A ticket for 2-5 people is €27; for one person it cost €19. These price apply through December 12; may be higher next year. On weekends the Bayern-Ticket is good all day. On weekdays it is good after 9 AM, which should do for most people arriving by air. It is good for regional trains, which get to Salzburg in about 2 hours (vs 1 1/2 hours for more expensive express trains). The Bayern-Ticket will also cover your travel on the S-bahn from Munich airport to either Ostbahnhof or Hauptbahnhof, wherever you decide to catch the train.

Keep in mind that the Bayern Ticket is only good during certain times and days. So if you're flying in and want to travel by train immediately, you have to take that into account.

I agree that flying to Munich, then by train to Salzburg is the way to go. As a matter of fact, my wife and I will be doing just that in May. It is very easy! When you arrive at the airport in Munich, purchase your Bavaria (Bayern) ticket. It can also be used for local transportation in
Munich. Take the S-Bahn from the airport to Munich Ostbahnhof (East train station), and transfer to a Regional train to Salzburg. Note: When using the Bayern Ticket, you cannot use the fast EC/IC trains, only the local/ regional ones. Find more info on the DB website, www.bahn.de. The ticket is valid all the way to Salzburg. When in Salzburg, purchase a day pass for their transportation system. It will save you some money. Also, the Salzburg Card is a good deal- attractions and transportation included in the price. There are some great guesthouses on Moosstrasse for around 50-60 Euros for 2 people, breakfast included. Gute Reise!

The Bayern ticket also leaves you yet a further excuse to go on the cheap. You can get up to 5 people on one Bayern ticket. If you sit towards the back of the train, especially towards the end of the working day, you will be asked by locals (in German!) if you're on a Bayern ticket and if they can buddy up with you. Even if you don't know what they're saying, take them up on the offer before you explain that you don't speak German (unless you do). Then just work out the details as best you can.

No, Jarrod, you get up to 5 people, not 6 on a Bayern-Ticket. For complete information on the Bayern-Ticket, go to www.bayern-takt.de.
