Travel into Bavarian Region

"Is a day trip into the Bavarian region possible" I'm not sure what you mean. Munich is the capital of Bavaria, which in terms of area, is the largest state in the federal republic of Germany. Is there a particular region of Bavaria you had in mind?

Munich is in Bavaria and it's a huge city! There are several different options that are great, but personally since you are close to Garmisch (still in Bavaria), I would get out there and tour the area. The town is beautiful and take either the train or the lift to the top of the Zugspitze. You could visit that in a day and you won't regret it. Just checking out the downtown city in Munich will take you a day. The trains are a great way to get around Germany and I ride them all the time.

Tom - thanks for the quick reply. What I meant was getting out of the city. I have travelled towards Salzburg earlier (into a small town called Trostberg) earlier - which was on business. Can I take a train into any of these smaller towns and get back by the end of the day ? Could you tell me about the frequency of the trains as well as the station that they operate out of ?

"Would you be able to tell me about the frequency of these trains and which station do they leave from ?" They leave from the main Munich train station (Hauptbahnhof) every hour. Takes about 90 minutes to reach the Garmisch trainstation, which sits smack in the middle of town.

An obvious long daytrip option if you haven't been there before is a visit to the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. Train from Munich Hbf to Füssen in about 2 hours. I had a change in Buchloe, but there are trains with no changes. Tour the castles. Train back. Reserve castle tours online before your trip.

A great daytrip from Munich is Regensburg.
