Travel insurance help.

I plan to buy travel insurance for my upcoming trip but would like help with a couple questions. Does anyone know if insurance would cover price of airfare if ticket was purchased using frequent miles? Normal ticket for my trip is $905 but since I would not have a ticket receipt showing $$ spent, just wondered as I would not want to lose the ticket if something did happen. Also the travel insurance company brochure that came in my R/S packet is AIG Travel Guard. Anyone had experience with them? Not sure I want to deal with AIG with all the stuff going on with them right now. Also, I am 65 so will pay a higher rate and would appreciate info from seniors that have had to use travel insurance companies that you had good experience with.

The travel insurance is TOTALLY dependent on what is written in the contract. READ it closely and ask questions of them, not us. Different policies cover different problems. You might try insuremytrip.com for comparisons.

Travel Insurance companies will only pay you trip cancellation benefits for out-of-pocket expenses that you've paid prior to your departure. So the frequent flyer miles won't count; just what you've actually paid.

Best place to find appropriate coverage is at a comparison web site like QuoteWright.com.

Squaremouth.com, and Insuremytrip.com have great options from which to pick, also.

Tony,
Check with your airline, but usually FF miles can be re-deposited if you cancel or delay your trip. There may be a fee if you change itineraries, but you shouldn't lose the miles if you cancel ahead of time.

Do you know if there is a travel coverage that will cover one against fraud? We're renting an apartment in Paris in November. 50% must be paid by check immediately upon signing contract; 50% must be paid by September and another 800Euro damage deposit is due in October. My fear is that we'll get there and the whole rental will have been a hoax/scam and we've lost our money.

I've spoken to references and checked out the photos on the website, comparing them to the Googlemaps and all looks legit, but you never know!

We purchased expensive insurance through AIG TravelGuard last year for our trip to Peru. We paid a high premium not knowing what would or wouldn't happen with regards to altitude sickness. At the last minute, a dependent parent was diagnosed with cancer and unfortunately, we lost most of the money we paid out for hotels and air because of the late cancellations. It took MONTHS of begging with the airline (the Peruvian airline LAN--Continental was fantastic and gave us every penny back the same day I called them)and with AIG to get our money back. Actually, we had to rebook everything after the parent died and pay it all over again and were back long before AIG and LAN gave in and paid us back. I wouldn't go with them again. Sorry, but it was a frustrating experience and not one we expected with the high premium we paid.

Scarily, travel insurance regulations vary depending on the state you live in. =\ So as others have mentioned, it's best to call and ask about frequent flyer miles.

We wound up going with Access America, a company both Triple AAA, and Orbitz use. We have a 69, and 70 yr old traveling with us, and the prices were very reasonable.

I tried insuremytrip.com, and it was a great resource for finding companies that offer insurance. However, I found cheaper rates by going to each site individually. (it's still a great site to compare/get info though!) hope that helps!

I’m a wife and mother of three and I had travel insurance through Travel Guard for my family’s trip to visit a relative in Italy last year. We ended up cancelling at the last minute do to my husband getting injured… Travel Guard was great during this time and totally refunded all of our airline tickets in addition to the cost of our trip plans in Italy… I’d totally recommend them.

We have travel insurance for an upcoming trip in Sept (a RS tour). My husband and I have traveled a lot and only in the last 2 years have we started buying insurance, and never had to collect. Sorry, I get sidetracked. Our upcoming trip is booked with frequent flier miles, and I asked the insurance company before buying with them what they would cover referencing the ff miles. they told me "any out of pocket expenses, which means the tax you pay on the ff ticket, and/or the fee to have the miles redeposited. Hopefully you don't have to collect on that insurance! What RS tour are you taking and when?
